Summary: I think I could have stopped him. Gerard and Mikey are enrolled in Catholic School after one of their classmates jkills themselves, and some of the students will be very helpful in moving them along.

Prologue }}

I keep on saying that there was something I should have done, and there was, but no one knows that, and if I have it my way, no one ever will. I could have done something, stopped him because I knew it was going to happen, but I thought he was bluffing...

Until it happened.

"Gerard. Hey. You. The only Gerard in the state of Jersey."

I laughed, but it always came out bitter. I was thinking about how no one in my family called Jersey new. Never. Because this state wasn't New. It was used and dirty and old and run-down, but it was home, and worn-in, comfortable in a way that only filth and grime could be. If nothing else besides him, Bert, my best friend, I would miss being able to say I would defend Jersey to the death. We would die for this state, us Jerseys, but we'd be the first ones on a bus getting the hell out of here.

"Yes, Mikey?"

God, is that me? I sound so...washed. Beaten. Wiped out and tired and...really, that's how I feel, actually. Washed to the point where you pick at my seams and I'd crumple on the ground. I groaned out loud, but Mikey ignored me, thankfully, as he hoisted my bag in the trunk of the car.

I have to hand it to him. I knew about him and Bert. He never really told me he was gay, I'm waiting for that moment, but c'mon, I may have lived in the basement, but I hear things when mom wasn't home. He didn't collapse after Bert...did it, but I watched him carefully none-the-less. He had to act like I was the only one who got hurt, when Bert had killed two people that day, not only himself.

"What're you doing?"

I sighed heavily, pulling my hair back and tucking it behind my ear to take place of the pencil I was pulling out.

"Nothing, thinking. Just thinking. That's all."

I needed to do one final thing before we left Jersey. I needed to start this, for me and for Mikey.
